I found out yesterday (9/3/98) that the brown Volvo belonging to the Brills has broken down for good. That car was our ticket to life off-campus for us our first year in college, taking us to the malls, the beaches, the clubs, the Rose Bowl, and the airport safely. And now, on its way down to LA yet again, it broke down and will never drive us places again.
What will we do without it? All sorts of memories were made in that car! (HEY, don't think dirty.) Next year will definitely not be the same without it. We couldn't look forward to seeing it in the parking lot across from Theta Chi anymore, wondering if Jeff had taken it without telling us. We couldn't cram (eight?) people in it anymore. We couldn't take it to the car wash anymore. I have grown to love it like I love my own car... I can't imagine how Bobby and Jeff must feel.
The consolation of the guys getting a new used car is hardly a consolation at all. While they will still have a mode of transportation, it won't feel right. But at the same time, I guess in a way, this marks the end of one school year and the beginning of a whole new one.
I will be getting a hold of some pictures of it soon as a sort of tribute to this dear Volvo to put on this page. And I hope Bobby especially will appreciate this shrine to his beloved car. (BTW, Bobby, yes I would gain 4000 lbs for you... and I'll even get a dark tan to simulate the color of the Volvo, if it'll make you feel better. That's what friends are for. :))
